Rent Near a Subway Stop. The Subway is a Way of Life for Most New Yorkers.
You should strongly considering renting an apartment near a subway stop. While New Yorkers make fun of it all the time, the truth is that the New York City subway is incredibly useful to get around the city. It is the largest transit system in the world. The New York subway has stations in all boroughs (Manhattan, Brookyln, Queens, Bronx) except for Staten Island.

Because the New York City subway is so efficient, most New Yorkers don’t own a car. In fact, I have lived in NYC for over 20 years and have never owned a car here. Most New Yorkers would tell you the same thing. But if you live near a subway stop, you don’t need a car.
You Should Also Pay Attention to Which Subway Line
While renting an apartment near a subway stop can be a very important, you should also consider which subway branch you want to be near. Think about where you will be going to work and where you will be socializing mostly. Make sure that the subway stops near your apartment fit both criteria.
For example, in Manhattan most subway lines run north and south. Few lines run east and west. If your commute is south of you, but your friends are east, make sure you fully understand the routes you need to take. Not all subway lines are created equal.
Your rent will be higher near a subway.
Being next to a subway is such an asset in NYC that all else being equal, your rent will be higher the closer you live to a subway. For this reason, if renting near a subway stop does not help your daily travel in any way, you may want to reconsider. Being further from a subway may be a better bet so that you are not paying for an attribute you are not using.
In sum, you should strongly consider renting near a subway stop if you need to travel daily to work or socialize. Just make sure it is the right subway line.
